SCREAM QUEENS...a call for help

Living in the era where social media rules is not an easy task. Even we all had embraced the fact that it's happening out there and most of us are part of it, doesn't mean its all good about it, and that is working properly. Things have changed drastically since those times where phones were just a home device to make calls and pictures were used to remember special occasions and travels. Also feel far those times where teenagers were just focused in organizing big parties and getting drunk, becoming the smartest guy in class or the most popular jock or be this year prom queen or the most popular chick in school. And then adults were focused on being grown ups, dealing with work, family and responsibilities, not trying to feel like teenagers again or dealing with stuff like any young guy would do. Things have changed and in matter of just a decade or two, we are living under new social rules and new social roles for everybody so with that sum of changes, comes a scream of help to put things together and start re organizing and controlling what has become a social mess and e-media invasion where nobody is excluded and everybody is inmerge even without noticing.

So as did in the past with previous shows trying to entertain while making a social revolution transforming things from open society's mind to re organizing social structure and fight for diversity, tolerance and acceptance, creator and producer Ryan Murphy, brings a new creation under the name of "Scream Queens" (2015-current), a new tv show that opened last fall season for a medium rating and mixed reviews, not trying to target older teenagers, so jumping from high school to college, but still trying to impact and reflect a new social environment with actual circumstances. Playing like a horror movie, follow the most recent tendency of that genre where a serial killer rises among college students just to start killing each one of them with an apparently no propose but whereat the same time anyone can be the killer and us, the audience, will play the role of a witness, trying to guess along the run who the killer could be, just to be surprised and twisted at every turn. But at the same time this is actually not a horror story but a comedy, a satire to be more specific, that will only use a fake horror mask to tell a story and follow that plot line while trying to entertain when its not preaching or becoming more annoying.

And everything starts with a possible murder from years ago, where the now adults were younger and were the students, just to become now the responsible ones trying to hide it but theres a collateral damage and it will show up with this new generation, that focuses any around a sorority, called Kappa Kappa Tau where a group of girls called the Chanels, leaded by queen teen Chanel Oberlin, trying to rule as bitch, spoiled, annoying, pretentious, superficial girl just focused on be the most popular, better looking and always right girl in campus while having a group of girls following her and doing whatever she dictates but hating her at the same time for treating them that way but letting her do it at the same time, sounds familiar?. Related to this group of girls will be a group of guys, some of them from a fraternity that relates to the girls as their masculine version leaded by Chad, a self centered jock that talks more than he thinks and as any guy in college just tries to have as sex as much as possible. But the real story begins once the Dean includes some low key girls to the sorority as an opportunity to create diversity and respect among the different groups mixing them to live together, but this nerdy girls all what they want is to become one of the Chanel's girls, so the competition is on.
By the time all this special and very cliched characters start to mix and suffer from interacting with each other, affecting each others lives, a serial killer under the name of The Red Devil, shows up to start killing everybody in campus, and pushing some of them to try to figure out who the killer is and what is up to, while other will just pretend that nothing happens and continue with their normal life. Because remember what i said, this is a satire, to everything can happen, and it will in the most extreme and ridiculous way just to make a point, like all this killing that only will prove why the show is called that way, as every female character will start screaming every 5 seconds turning any fun into an annoying competition for the best pair of lungs in tv history. And all the blood and gruesomeness performed just tries to show and prove how blind we have become, focused on taking selfies at any time, at every place we are at. Trying to expose ourselves in the media, like scream of help to get more attention, trying to become someone and be more popular, ad stand among others just to prove we exist. And still will be a competition, to be more beautiful or popular. Have better clothes or attend to better parties. Doesn't matter if you a good or bad person, al what this generation matters is how big you are out there. Manipulate, abuse, lie, whatever it takes to make yourself someone over the rest.

All sounds like perfect ingredients for a thriller or comedy. Trying to expose a new generation self centered and narcissistic. But instead what we got is neither of that but some funny gags filled with pop culture references and some stylish based on very well known cliches, a group of characters that never shine by themselves or can become a new icon on tv history, and all together gets to a point of annoyance by this laud and silly girls followed by stupid and simple guys, all behaving like adults trying not to be adults, and the real grown ups are just mere second characters serving to this teenagers for a mere purpose without bringing an identity that will compare two different generations clashing into a new social structure or serving as mere metaphor of how adulthood have become into a new come to age phase were at 40 people are still fighting to realize and find what they want and who they are following the steps of their younger ones. So by the end, the killer would not matter as much as should be finding a clue to it's motive but just to root for te end of this group of people that might deserve what they are getting in a world that tolerate them and all what they are able to do without consequences other than take their phones away as if that would change this and that might be the biggest metaphor of all, when we are trying to change this just by ignoring them or becoming part of it, so looking at them from a different perspective won't change anything but a scream of help might wake us up from this fantasy and realize how far have we gone in dehumanization and lack of communication to set new rules for us to survive as a functional society and then, just maybe, start killing all those ones than are a lost cause.

A Hologram for the King... and flash news for yourself

So what happen when we get to a point in life where we turn around and we ask ourselves: How did i get here? or now what? or what i'm doing now?. All these where subjects usually brought up in the so called mid life crisis, when people get to certain age just to make a stop in life an wonder what they've been up to, or something happens that shakes their world, forcing them to open their eyes. But now all these things are no longer part of a mid point in life but come to the page at any moment and sometimes in several occasions but one. Expectations and competition had grown so it's harder to achieve our goals and changes are constantly a matter of time and re inventing ourselves is no longer an option but a necessity. But how can we deal we this and how do we face the fact that we are able to lose ourselves in order to survive or serve a bigger picture, one that is no longer includes us. There's no book anymore to tell us what to do or how to get things done as every case is different and circumstances might seem too different to just follow the book, but if we look closer even that could be a language barrier or a cultural difference, at the essence we are all the same and we suffer from the same pain and concerns, just they are delivered in different package.

From the pages of the popular and beloved novel, comes the motion picture adaptation "A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING"(2016), the story of a struggling businessman trying to ditch a millionaire deal for class A technology to the king of Arabia Saudita when trying to build  new city that promises to be the future for a country that lives far from the recession and scared economic of North America. But there's more going on for this middle aged guy than just closing a deal but to move on from his failures marriage and his ex wife high expectations while trying to be a good father and provide to his daughter with the proper college education. No wonder why all this stress has develop into a big bump in his back that might look like a small hump or a sign of cancer. Unfortunately he'll learn that his health is better than never but just need to remove the bump to avoid any future consequences, which means take away all chance of making more excuses for his lack of energy, creative and sexual stamina. But what happen when you have no one to blame for all your failures anymore? Is it time to be back on track and bring back all those qualities that we loved and admire from ourselves long time ago, and those that got us where are we now?

When Clay, our peculiar guy takes us in his journey around the world to a new and misunderstood middle eastern culture, we can't but relate to all his struggle to adapt to an unknown place that doesn't even speak the same language not to say can't accept women as equal forcing them to hide behind clothes and stay away from interaction with any male. So when his team suffer from the lack of attention from his new host and pressure from his boss starts to get on fire, anxiety and stress arise taking him to even have an attack. All this will lead him to a beautiful doctor in whom he would find some piece of advise and confort. Also will meet and get a long with a driver that will try to be friendly with the foreigner bringing him with his friends and showing him more of their culture and new places that will open his mind. When we lose ourselves the only way back is to step out of our bubble and be able to see things in perspective, right?, but how do we get out of that bubble if sometimes we can't even realize that we are trapped in it until might be too late or even when we realize it is hard to find a way out as things keep pushing us back.

We were raised to behave and be someone that others expect. There are social rules that dictate what a ma or women should be but how about our own needs and ideals and how can we find happiness when trying to satisfy other expectations. Our children or family become our priority and motivation. They expect something from us other than the basics but a certain role that will provide them with proud and love. Because of this we tend to forget what we need to provide others with what they expect. Like a cycle we need to receive in order to give, otherwise we'll become a machine of giving drained by so many factors that will blind us till is too late to handle and end with us. Feel loved, finding a connection, enjoying moments that make us laugh, cry, be surprised, all are part of a need to feel alive, so even sometimes we blame a specific factor, a real one, the background is hiding on all this check list that we are supposed to full fill in order to achieve but sometimes they are only signs that we are in the wrong path and a change or a u turn is needed and destiny always will play a factor getting on us close to new opportunities but is only on us if we take them or we let them go.

Knowing ourselves is key to realize our strong and weakness. This will let us re discover our true soul and be back on the game, but a journey that will take us out of the comfort zone and challenge us in a way that we can push us out what is making us miserable won't hurt. Sometimes the clash of cultures will help to open our eyes and see things in a different perspective, specially when we can look closer and realize than even in this crazy place they suffer from the same problems as anyone back home: love, career, success, family, respect, friendship, money, future, is all the same around the world, cause at the end we are still all humans but living under different scenarios but deep down sharing the same body and mind, so our basic need, and social structures are the same just wearing a different costume. Performed by the awarded actor Tom Hanks under the hands of German director Tom Tykwer, know better for his style in previous unique stories of people in search of themselves or a major motive, this adaptation of the book success in bringing to the screen a story that feels familiar and anyone can relate to even it's happening at the other side of the world, but also lacks the heart to involve us in the suffer and love that is supposedly happening but filling it with cliche scenes and moments just to please the audience and make it accesible instead of keeping close to a risky proposal, so at the end it's failure happens to be the same one his own and main characters suffers from making it hard to criticize or judge as a whole or personal. Experience it for yourself while you can.

SING STREET... life is better singing

This is not a story of love, neither about life, nor music, but definitely is all about all of that and none of them. Is a story about happiness and sadness cause love and life is happy/sad. And is about that moment in life when we have to man up and except life for what it is and take it how it comes, accepting the fact that can be shitty and will be stupid people around us trying to make our lives miserable but only accepting that we'll be able to face it and enjoy it seeing what is good about it. Because that's what music is for, a form of expression to expuse ourselves to others with music and lyrics that will show our feeling and thoughts to others in a way that simple words or actions can't. That's how rock n' roll was created and exploded back in time, as a revolution, an art form for the rebels seeking truth among all social repression and trying to prove that we can be better, that we are different from what everybody expect and it's ok to be different and we can respect and accept other for their versatility and diversity is part of humanity. We are all different but at the same time we all share the same questions, we all seek the same ideals and love and we all scream for acceptance and respect, while we need to stand by ourselves and be recognize for it, so at the end all this is about fighting for our dreams and as every cliche, for every boy, it's all about a girl.

This is "Sing Street" (2016), the new film from the creator and director of "Once" (2008), and Begin Again" (2014), two stories very different from each other but one thing in common: music is one of the main characters and as it is brings a new feeling about stories about love and family, but not in this case, where for a third round music will be line to tell a story about growing up but this is not a coming of age story, neither a feel god movie even that it's music evokes those great beats that became classic back in the 80's creating a soundtrack that screams hormones and youth at every note, so since the beginning we are touch for those bands that are part of anyones childhood if grew up back in that classic decade of the 80's, where rock n' roll evolve into a more pop and joyful scene, and the music videos became a new art. In this way we are introduce to the life of Conor, a teenager from Dublin, Ireland, trapped in a dysfunctional family where his parents keep fighting every night, and their mistakes as usual ended changing their kids lives, like sending him to a new school, a catholic one, where will be only boys, and bullying comes either from other tormented classmates as from their closed minded priests/teachers.

Trapped in this new world, he sees the light in a shape of a beautiful girl that dreams to become a model and moved to London where she will make her dreams come true and specially moved away from that island. But she's not interested in younger guys, she has higher expectations that can't come from teenagers across the street. So he lies and invites her to be part of his band video. So now, first of all, he will need to have a band. And with so, he embarks in a journey where music is just an excuse or a way to better purpose. But in this new adventure he is as blind as he is naive and clueless in love and life, so he only finds the light in hands of his older brother, a guy that lives trapped in the house of his parents after quitting to his dreams in order to help his family and save his little brother from the chaos they've been living for the last years, and his lack of courage to fight for his dreams, he only sees them through the tv and a record collection that makes him look like a music enciclopedia. so he helps his brother with the lyrics for his new band, so he is introduced to music by his new friends and band mates and now they are easy to go and practice and perform. So what starts as just as an excuse to impress and talk to a girl becomes a guy motivation in life, helping him to realize who he is, making him confident of his talent and surrounded by people that accepts him and share ideals makes him face challenges that in other way he'd never had done.

But remember we already say that this is not a feel good movie nether a coming to age one. But at this point the director will have made us relate to this characters and be rotting with them through the sticky lyrics of their songs while they learn about life and become a man while still be a young guy. And even we are enjoying their new songs mashing up with old classics, not every thing is sweet and rainbows in here, because life is not like that, and as everyone of us learned at some point, will be tough moments that we'd prefer to skip or forget but we need them in order to learn and grow up, become stronger. To love or be loved we need to get our heart broken. To understand what means to get to know someone and cherish someone at your side, we need to take bad decisions and understand that love is happy/sad, meaning for every happy moment will be a sad one, and that's why we dream and compose joyful songs that push us to be strong and fight harder to achieve that happiness that we want badly, cause we all, deep in us, we want for great and good thing to happen to us and the people we love: be successful, lovable, happy, able to have fun and enjoy life, but back in reality is not as easy as that cause everybody is holding their own baggage and won't go away as easy as singing a song. So we'll face them and their own ghosts, they will try to defeat us, challenge us, bring us down, so they can feel superior or better than us or just because they are afraid of us of what they don't know.

That's why music brings people together, and as a band, we need a group of people that shares our same ideals, dreams, love for stuff, and their own personalities will add a new ingredient to our own person. They will teach us some lesson the same way we will teach them with example what they like the best from us. Because we need those happy and fun moments to feel strong enough to face the rest of the world and because we can't do everything by ourselves. We always need help. And sometimes we get this from the ones we expect the less. And sometimes this comes from the places we look the least, like home. That's one of the biggest lessons that our young Conor will learn, coming from his own brother, the one that has been there always for him but never asked anything in return. He always had defend him and protect him from the chaotic environment they live at, and their selfish parents to self involve to encourage him to purse his dreams. But he gave up his dreams as a musician, because he used to be a great guitar player, use to be popular and have girls screaming at his feet. But he wasn't brave enough to leave his family and follow his own dreams. Instead he stayed and looked after his family and became the center of it, bringing some balance and fun to it. But sadly this is not his story, neither Conor's or his friends and band mates. Not even the girl in distress. This is a tribute to all of them through music but mostly this a sorry of brotherhood and a tribute to all brothers that inspire our lives and made an impact of them to push us to go after our dreams and came the real puppeteers behind them, encouraging us with advices and tips to be popular with girls and to try new things and in every move they are behind as a side kick that can be the main creator of the story of our lives, so yes, this might be a story of love, family, music and it's tribute to all brothers out there.

Everybody Wants Some!! ... what did you get??

Sometimes, it's not all about a story but a bunch of moments that define the person that we'll become. And mostly the people that surround us will influence in many ways our perspectives and ideas of live, love, success, fun and friendships. All that and more is "Everybody wants some!!"(2016), the new project from awarded director Richard Linklater, the one that in my personal opinion should had won the Oscar last year, but as he has proved with his unique style, we get another story that is more like a sum of moments that in certain way celebrate the early 80's as a new decade awakening to the modern era we know these days and also to the process of acknowledging who we are transitioning from a teenager to a man. Because who hasn't questioned before how come they became the guy we are now, the man that goes to work and watch games and drinks beer just as everybody else instead of something different or maybe just the opposite. Every man embraces the fact or being part of a group of guys and feel like a wolf pack venturing through the world seeking validation from himself and others and specially from the opposite sex, a mission that every man dedicates full time, the feeling of being desired and popular among women that are willing to believe all his speech and go as far as he will be ready to take them.

So in order to tell all this misfortunes, we are introduce to the baseball of team of a regular american college, where leaded by one of the new guys in the team, we'll also get to meet the rest of the team or at least the ones that make the team the number one in the state. But who are these guys? Some of them have nicknames, others are called by their names and a few are just followed by their personality. The one that is ruled by hormones and desires. Trying to conquer the world, their own world and searching for answers that will come after a long session of smoking and drinking, but mostly at those times when bounding with the rest of the guys just trying to make it through another day, building relationships and discovering personalities that will click and others that won't. What defines being a man? Why do they all behave like a bunch of idiots amor cave men just trying to have fun or prove something. And that might be the point as all of them start to get competitive and that competition leads to perfectionism and that will put together a group of individuals willing to do their best and prove among the others that they are part of the team, that they have something to offer, and that opportunity is well appreciate and admire by the others just in time for be part of a team and feel part of a group that will support you as much as taking advantage of you.

Here won't be feelings arising or drama. They will hate each other just to be cool ten seconds later. They will push each other to their limits just to get what is needed from everyone but also will make fun of you if necessary to break the ice and entertain the rest and prove how smart and funny you are making stupid jokes using you as a bait because they makes me smarter over you. But ate the end all is for a good cause and just after the first pitch of beer arrives, they will become closer as brothers. How many guys are hazed and heated in school or their jobs just for being different? How many times we wonder why we did such bunch of stupid thing back then just to follow others? It's all about having fun, but behind that, hides the real essence of anyone, after the first couple of days when we pretend and show the face we are trying to wear in public, we start showing our true colors and everybody start getting a real idea of who we are over who we want to be. But thanks to all those moments that we are pushed or tempted to try is that we experienced all kind of feelings and ideas that will open our mind to figure out what is our own concert of life and what we want from it.

Man will be man, no matter what, and specially when a woman is involved. Then he will bring the best of him to try to conquer her heart or just get laid. But those moments at a party while getting waisted and chasing girls by giving them a big speech about how amazing we are, trying to making them laugh so they can see how sweet and funny we are, hoping that will take us to bed and get naked, is just part of a ritual that will help in the future to earn some practice and make up our mind about the type of girl we want for us in the real deal. Because men have only one thing in mind all the time, and that only thing is the one we share with all our species: sex. Because there is nothing more important than having as much sex as possible. It's not about our grades, classes, connections, networking, etc that we go to college but the multiple possibilities that all men have to get super laid.

And that's why everybody want some. Success, fun, sex, parties, friends, love, knowledge.  A new future opens for us when we are young and these might apply in other ways any time of our lives. Never is too late to break barriers, open our mind and rediscover ourselves. Making new friends and embracing all those thing we know we like and try some other new will make us go from one decade to the there and instead of college, it might be a new job, a new city or actually going back to school and keep ourselves preparing in new fields and turning our lives into multiple circles instead of just one but always good to make a quick stop and celebrate those moments when possibilities felt like a first time, when you realize that you are freshmen in colleague, meaning you are not in high school anymore and that puts you into another level and now you are by yourself and it's time for you to start making your decisions, creating a new family that will be packed for your recently assigned and selected brothers cause they will be part of your next years and then for the rest of your life just to realize you did the same to them because everybody gets some.
