The growing of a TEEN WOLF

Ok, MTV is not the best broadcast network and it's shows are not know for being deep, powerful, touching, or even great acting. In addition, everyone who grew up in the 80's will remember a comedy called Teen Wolf, a mix of a teenage comedy where trying to make fun of the myth of werewolves, taking all it's background from stories, novels, and movies just to translate them into a couple of bad jokes and place them in high school, where the popular teen actor of the moment will perform this outcast figure.

Of course the movie was a box office hit, and that brought a sequel but that doesn't mean did much for the werewolf mythology neither for it's filmography. Actually the transformation of this creature from a human to a beast is more like a bad halloween costume. So what could we possible expect from a tv show based on this movie, under the once music videos network? A new vision of the same bad joke for the new generations.

Thats how we got "TEEN WOLF" (2011), a new series where they try to make this teenage version of a human beast gets darker while dealing with all the crazy things of growing up and become a monster, which sometimes is not far for becoming an adult.

So the plot again, focus on Scott, a young miscast in a small town. The cliche type of a nerdy, shy guy that always wanted to join the rugby team and hang with the popular kids. So when he accidentally get bitten by a werewolf on a full moon at the woods, he will turn into one himself, but included in the package comes a great human/teenager body, a new attitude and amazing skills for sports. So, no wonder why, he can get the new gorgeous chick of the school and get into the team.

Just happens that this girl is daughter of a famous werewolf hunter which complicates the relationship. And also we have the best friend, which other than be a loyal side kick, serves as the comic relief even if its just a non sense slap joke. That way, the whole first season will turn into this fight for the newbie wolf to learn what he has become and fight against his urges and feeling while dealing with school and teenage stuff, family, police, friends, teachers and an werewolf alpha male included, who wants him to join the pack.

To be honest, has some fun episodes but it's very simple and more often stupid, from a no teenager perspective (why teenagers always make the wrong decisions base in the pursue of love), but by the second season things start to fall in place and actually even the storyline still feels simple, gets more entertaining tuning the whole season in a kind of scooby doo cartoon where all mysteries and weird things happened for a reason that its not very logic but at least makes sense and explains everything.

So following this clues, our main characters become a trio in a quest of different supernatural creatures and events that will bring darker situations and explore that dark side in them, even if there will be a joke to ruin the moment or break the ice. Joining to this group will be the anti hero werewolf, the one who initiate everything, a hunky guy that want to create his own pack, while showing off his six pack. So then more will be bitten and join the wolf club with will bring t the table this sense and core of the wolves, the move in pack, following the alpha, which leads all of them, and the meaning in real life of create this sort of family where everyone has a role and work as a team.

Also the more werewolves the more chances to bring new character, played by this very attractive guy, who will take any chance to show off their muscles or just walk around shirt less, as rebels agains society rules. So by season three we are already hooked up with a show that is evolving in their story and performances, FX and budget. We care about its characters, even when they are facing supernatural things we root for them cause we are able to empathize with their now more grown up attitude, even if sometimes they try to hard to keep good instead of embrace their wild side or human nature.

The show has turn by his actual season, into one of the most entertaining shows currently airing. Yes, we still have the collection of hunky guys and beautiful chicks, looking great even when they are trying to kill each other, but at least they also try to solve this supernatural mysteries while solve the big drama of being a teenager. They embrace this friendship and the fears of being along, failure and acceptance. You can't be perfect or this monster and still have a code to try to make things better.
Cause when we are teenagers we really don't care, we have a long life ahead. We just tried to understand ourselves, have fun while we can, and make sense of our feelings, emotions and responsibilities without getting crazy and follow the rules while breaking others. And yes, all think that their high school sweet heart will be the love of their life till sex comes to the table and notice than you can fuck with more than one, and everything messes up.

But life is about finding the right people to join in your life, so if you can embrace your inner teen, you might enjoy the evolution of a really bad project into a something different and better, as you did once when you became adult and realized that every monster we met is a creating of our own fears and everybody has a dark side and that what the mythology of the werewolves are, another excuse to explore the animal side of being one, the one who walks on top of the chain till he mutates into a more powerful one to get on second at the ladder or thats why we are killing all the other species, in order to avoid that?, Thats actually scarier. Happy Halloween.
