Who's not a fan of the Hunger Games series at this point? Well if you haven't fallen for this series about another dystopian future where North America is a survivor from a cvil war that turned it into a new country called Panem, divided in 13 districts and the Capitol. Every District is in charge to supply one of the basic industries in order to survive as a whole. A mix between the modern Capitalism and Communism.
All this introduction give us the chance to explore a survival story with political plots that feel very real and update these days. At the center of the story is Katnees Everdeen, the girl in fire, a new symbol for the uprising revolution against the Capitol. This girl happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, so her journey starts when she decided to volunteer in the Hunger Games in order to safe her younger sister and became the journey to save her town, family, her beloved ones and herself.
With her skills for hunting, she feels and advantage to survive but her lack of social skills will make her grow up more girl to woman, from hunter and country girls to fighter and leader woman. But what really turn us in is the cause she is fighting us, she didn't choose to be this person, but now that she is involved she realizes all the suffer and injustice that this new era has bring to all her people.
The last book of the series is divided in two parts, obviously for mere economical reasons, so what we got as a movie is the first half of a book that centers and concludes the revolution was building up, but this time feels more like a political thriller than a young adult movie. All the action is kept safe for the last chapter. Instead we got great performances from all the characters we've been relating to and the promise of this fight against the government. And far from showing a love triangle, we are still able to perceive love and hope among these teenagers when in a battlefield still humans and capable of falling for the one who fights at our side or the one who keep us safe.
But now all the characters are showing their human side at the battlefield, some are survivors trying to get themselves together after all what they've been through. Other are the minds behind the curtains, pulling the strings to plan and make the revolution happen but suffering agains the consequences of their actions. And finally we got the media, the third power, who can inspire or destroy hopes, playing as a sneaky snake able to get into every corner and manipulate the perspective of all their culture.
Because of that, the other side the movie can't be more accurate in timing as in recent days has been a lot of political movements in several countries that are suffering from a government oppression like the middle east or fighting against the actual government like South America, or civil wars around west Africa and the manipulation of the media and government of North America.
What the movie inspires is that feeling of doing and fighting for the right reasons. There always will be two sides of political believes and power will be involves as much as corruption, greed, money, personal agendas, but should be us, the citizens, the ones able to decide how all of this will be ruling them. Getting involve in their culture and being able to enjoy and have benefits for a quality life as a result of their hard work and their taxes (tributes in the movie language).
So maybe this movie won't be the favorite for the series and will be seen just a bridge between the excitement of the last two and the, hopefully, well served final fight, but maybe with out planing it this way, might be seen just as a reminder of what's going on at the other side of the screen and people can take it as more than pure entertainment but a reminder of be strong in difficult times and to fight against the oppression they are suffering and become their own mockingjay.
